Common Black Ant which everybody knows, the good old garden ant. It is found everywhere in the Barnt Green area and no matter what you do, short of sterilising the ground which kills everything, you have just got to live with it. The queen can be as big as 15 mm but the worker or male is only 4 - 5 mm long.
Ants frequently build their nests in the insulation layers of houses and from there they penetrate up into the house itself through the cracks which inevitably appear in the concrete and cement.
Ghost Ants
Ghost ants mainly live on a diet of sweets but also feed on grease and occasionally living or dead
insects. They will occupy areas of high moisture, and although colonies are usually established
outside, they can set up camp inside domestic houses during dry conditions.
Pharoahs Ants
Female Pharaoh ants can lay 400 or more eggs in her lifetime. The entire life cycle takes about 38
to 45 days depending on temperature and relative humidity. Unlike most ants, they breed continuously
throughout the year in heated buildings and mating occurs in the nest.
